5 Reasons to Look Forward to Darker, Shorter Days
As the days grow shorter and colder, it’s easy to slip into a negative mindset. But there are positives to this time of year we may not realize.
THE WARMUP
As the days grow shorter and the cold sets in, it’s easy to slip into a negative mindset.
Naturally as humans, colder, darker months have a way of intensifying our desire to hibernate, and for many, this time of year can feel isolating or even daunting.
Even I deal with instances of seasonal depression that come with this time of year.
But just as every season has its challenges, each one also brings its own unique gifts, if we’re open to seeing them.
Stay with me.
Winter offers a different rhythm. It’s a slower season, yes, but there’s beauty in that pace.
It encourages us to look inward, to rest, and to find warmth in unexpected places. Instead of resisting the season, what if we welcomed it?
There are quiet joys here that you won’t find in any other time of year—subtle moments of connection with nature and with ourselves that are easy to overlook.
Instead of dwelling on what we miss about the warmer months (trust me, I do this too), we can lean into what this season does give us: moments of stillness, coziness, and calm.
Let’s start "The Workout," and dive a little deeper into some practices that bring out the hidden positives in fall/winter.
THE WORKOUT
1. Hygge
Throughout my whole life, this was one of my all time favorite “feelings” as a human being, but I could never truly describe what it’s called.
I finally discovered the perfect word—Hygge.
This Danish/Nordic concept captures feelings of coziness, warmth, and a sense of well-being shared with loved ones. This is a time where we embrace the chance to “bring the light in” with candles, fresh linens, warm drinks, and time with friends and family.
Practicing hygge can turn winter’s chill into an invitation to create comfort and a sanctuary within your home.
2. Blue Light
No, not the light beaming from our phones…The time just before sunrise and after sunset brings a calming blanket of blue light over the earth.
This gentle hue has a soothing effect on the nervous system, making it a perfect time to be in nature.
Consider an early morning walk to take advantage of this tranquil light while also getting natural sunlight exposure to support your circadian rhythm.

Each season offers a slightly different atmospheric color—right now is an ideal time to appreciate the beauty of blue light.
3. Apricity
This word is like the little brother to “Hygge” and encapsulates that “feeling” I was talking about earlier.
Apricity is defined as the warmth of the sun on a cold day, and it’s one of winter’s most beautiful pleasures.
This feeling, best experienced on brisk days with a cozy blanket and a hot drink in hand, is a simple reminder of warmth even in the coldest seasons.
The unique joy of apricity is something we can only savor in winter, making it a special treat during these colder, shorter days.
4. Time with the Moon
There’s a reason so many people worship the moon throughout history.
The moon, a powerful grounding presence, is often overlooked until it’s full.
In winter, with more hours of darkness, we have extra opportunities to see the moon in its various phases. Each phase offers its own rituals and practices to connect more deeply with nature.
Embracing these lunar moments can add depth and rhythm to our routines and provide a peaceful anchor throughout winter’s longer nights.
5. Winter Solstice
Come December, the winter solstice marks the shortest day and longest night of the year.
It acts as a symbolic turning point. It’s a reminder that, from this point forward, days will slowly lengthen, bringing more light with each passing week.
Use the solstice as a time for reflection and presence. This can help ward off the winter blues and provide us a hopeful perspective to carry us through the season.
ANALYSIS
Seasonal depression is a real challenge that’s affected me and many others across the country during these darker, colder months.
It’s not uncommon to feel lower energy, more fatigue, or a sense of sadness as sunlight becomes scarce.
To combat these effects, I make sure to take Vitamin D3 and K2 supplements to maintain healthy levels during this time.
Prioritizing exercise, too, is essential for boosting mood and energy.

THE COOL DOWN
Winter can test us, and I’m no stranger to how tough it can be.
Seasonal depression is a very real challenge, something I and many others navigate each year.
For me, maintaining my well-being during these darker months means staying proactive and taking a step back to relish in the positives that winter brings us.
No matter what challenge it is in life, there’s always a positive lesson or mindset that comes from it. The colder, darker months of fall/winter are no exception.
Don’t let it overcome you.
After all, you are the only one that should have control over your mental psyche.
Be well and Keep Pluggin.
